The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad also offers a winter train ride through the stunning Nantahala Gorge throughout November and December. Just a few miles outside of Asheville, NC, this section of railroad in the small town of Woodfin hearkens back to the old days of railroad travel. The historic train cars and trolleys have been lovingly and carefully preserved by dedicated volunteers so visitors from all over can enjoy this exciting piece of history. To celebrate the holidays, they add a layer of festive cheer with lights and decorations when they invite travelers to climb aboard for a 2-mile round-trip journey. The train leaves on the hour, and about 30 minutes into the ride guests will enjoy hot chocolate and cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
